Ambiguous Spanish premiere of a documentary film in Valladolid

The festival shows a film that portraits the dictator`s shadow over the present

After many vicissitudes and ambiguous rejections in Spain the Festival de cine de Valladolid premiered on Friday night the documentary Franco's Settlers (Los colonos del Caudillo), a film made by the German/ Spanish couple Dietmar Post and Lucía Palacios, residents of Berlín. Probably it is the film that best portrays the shadow Franco still projects over present day Spain. An incident surrounding the premier on Friday confirmed this.

The film gives voice to many different individuals and views with laudable moderation. Post and Palacios tell us the story of one of 300 "new villages", Llanos del Caudillo (Ciudad Real), which was founded during the Franco dictatorship to cement the social basis of the regime in rural areas in the 50s. The settlement experiment was inspired by Mussolini's fascism.

The day prior to the premier the son of one of the Francoist protagonists interviewed in the film threatened the filmmakers and the festival with legal action if the content of the film was not ok-ed by the interviewee. If this is surprising, more so is the silence of festival director Javier Angulo over this strange and appalling circumstance, which surrounded the premiere and leaves the filmmakers in a state of uncertainty and confusion over these events. They are upset and frightened by Angulo's silence and attempt to hide and ignore the intended censorship and suppression of the film. The incident “reflects clearly that certain sectors of Spanish society haven't overcome the dictatorship" says co-director Dietmar Post.

Franco's Settlers had a preview screening last year in Berlin, supported by former Spanish prime minister and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

“This brilliant documentary film signifies a great history lesson. The most incredible thing is how it takes you to the current political situation in Spain. A film that gives you goose bumps", comments Dominik Wessely, filmmaker and professor of documentary films in Cologne. The film partly had been financed through crowd-funding. The most prominent German painter, Daniel Richter, donated four silk screen prints in support of the film. Felipe González anticipated in Berlin that "this film will surprise many people in Spain". In the region of La Mancha alone remain 800 streets dedicated to the founder of the fascist party José Antonio Primo de Rivera and 500 to the dictator Franco. All over Spain there are still a dozen villages that carry the dictator's name.

Double attempt of censorship?

At the second largest Spanish International Film Festival in Valladolid there was an attempt to stop the two screenings of the film "Franco's Settlers". A threatening letter had been sent by the son of one of the protagonists interviewed in the film. Various Spanish newspapers and German radio have reported on the incident. The reaction of the festival director, surprisingly was to sweep the attempted censorship under the carpet. The posters of the film were not put up at the movie theater. All movie posters, including one that showed Hitler and a huge swastika (looking for sensation and a scandal) were prominent but not the one that showed the Spanish dictator in a satirical manner. The filmmakers would have liked to make this incident public in solidarity with the festival but the festival director's reaction was to silence everything and to reject openly defending one of the main democratic values, freedom of speech. This reaction shows that there is an on-going fear to address the dictatorial and fascist past. You can put Hitler (Hitler sells) up on a wall but you are not allowed to put up Franco. You can make gore movies about the Indonesian dictatorship (The Act of Killing) but if you make a movie that in its aesthetic and content is the opposite of sensational and in which the defenders and opponents of/to the Franco dictatorship are given a chance to expose, in a pluralistic way, their ideas then you are facing a sort of double attempt of censorship.
